Comedy by JEFF MIRZA
"Jeff Mirza is the EMMA Award winning Comedian's version of 'Brimful of Asha' sung from the point of view of a corner-shop owner. Hence the chorus - 'A tinful of tuna fish one-forty-five' is hilarious" London Evening Standard.
Jeff Mirza says"I've found comedy is a great vehicle for pushing ideas. Talking about issues through comedy can really help. My comedy is not for Asians specifically: I'm not an 'Asian comedian' as such. I've played Edinburgh a few times."
"I like the idea of turning a stereotype on its head. One of my favourite stories is the one of my family's annual day out where, me mum, dad, brothers and sisters are all going out in a mini bus to a nice white conservative area - and dad would look for a house with a FOR SALE sign outside. Then dad would stand outside the house and shout down a megaphone in his Pakistani accent "Me and my family are moving into your area!!!! You've never had it so Good!" - It's laughter without prejudice. Jeff is regarded by many on the comedy circuit as the 'God Father' of Asian Stand-Up. In this exclusive interview for the Asian Network Report web-site the 'Comedy King' himself, Jeff tells us what life was like back in the early days and shares his personal experience of making it as a Stand Up for over a decade Jeff is a veteran of TV and film and his acting credits include Bend It Like Beckham and the role of Mo in the TV adaptation of Zadie Smith's White Teeth. When in 1995, he became a finalist in the BBC Open Mic award for the Stand-up Show he gave up his job as a structural engineer and took to being a full-time comedian. Jeff won an EMMA award for comedy in 2003. He was a finalist in the BBC Open Mic Award at the Edinburgh Festival.
He has played the circuit in London including Jongleurs and The Comedy Store.
